Beginning the New Year

The new year is off to a great start! The kids have learned so much up to this point of second grade it is almost unbelievable. So far we have learned how to add and subtract two digit numbers, how to count money, what shapes we can use to make larger shapes, the life cycle of animals, about the branches of the government and soooo much more!

We are continuing to keep learning more and more everyday. This is what we are learning about now.

Math:
We just finished our topic on fractions and are begining our topic on Measurment: Length and Area. This is a fun topic when kids get to learn how to measure objects using nonstandard and standard units of measurement.

Reading:
The series continues. We have just begun Unit 4-Look Again. This unit's theme is camouflage. The unit has stories about animals and how they use camouflage to stay safe. There are many reasons why camouflage is important.

Writing:
We have been working hard on writing a story about when we were younger. This ties into our social studies unit on history. The kids pretend to be telling a story to their grandkids about when they were 7 or 8 years old.

Social Studies:
We have started our history unit. We have learned that history is the change over time. We watched some cool videos from the 1920's and 1930's from the small local towns. We were able to see a big change what they use to look like, and what they look  like now. Thank you Mr. Fenton for letting us borrow those videos.

Spelling:
Everyone keeps working hard and getting better on their spelling each week. We will continue to keep working hard.

2nd Grade Learning

Math:
We have almost completed the topic on Adding and Subtracting 2-digit numbers. The next topic will be Using Addition and Subtraction.

Reading:
In reading we have just started a new theme for this next unit. The new theme is "Around the Town."
Kids will be learning and reading stories about towns and business' within those towns. They learn a lot about how communities work together. Feel free to send pictures, questions, statements, and etc. with them to put on our concept board. This board just features things about communities from the newspaper and magizines.

Spelling:
We have continued to do our weekly spelling test.

Science:
We just started our unit on the Earth's Surface. We will be learning about what the earth's surface is made of and how it is made.

Social Studies:
We just finished our unit about maps and landforms. The students really seemed to enjoy this unit.

Writing:
In writing we have written letters to Santa and will begin our next big writing topic soon.

Mock Voting

It is that year! Voting year. Children got to learn a little bit about voting and
why it is done. The school also held a "mock" voting booth for the kids.
I think they really enjoyed it and had fun. They had many questions about voting.

2012-13 School Year Off to a Great Start!

I can't believe we are almost 9 weeks into the school year already!! We have learned so much already but still have much more to learn!

In math we have reviewed our addition and subtraction strategies along with learning place value and numbers to 100. We will so be learning to count money!

In reading, we have read many fun stories in our new series. We continue to learn new vocabulary and different reading strategies. In phonics we are learning different letter combinations and sounds. We just learned that the sound /f/ can be made by the letters ph.

In Science we just finished our unit on plants and animals. We learned about mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and birds. We learned about their lifecycles and different needs each one has. We are soon going to begin learning about our government in social studies.

We've had various centers through out the year during our center time. We've had math, buddy reading, free reading, writing, computers, and spelling center.

This year has been going by so quickly, but we have a had a lot of fun and have learned so much to this point! We will continue on this same path for the rest of the school year.

Centers are great for learning!

Here are some pictures from some centers in our classroom.
